“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” is the saying that almost everyone knows. What girl wouldn’t love to have a shiny diamond ring or a diamond necklace as part of her jewelry collection? Additionally, we know that diamonds are expensive, and purchasing them can be difficult, let alone insuring them, and treating them appropriately.

Yet, her life changed forever when what she thought was a fake diamond turned out to be something very different.
Her story begins in 1980 in London, England. In West London, a woman decided to stop by a car boot sale at the West Middlesex Hospital while she was having a perfectly normal day. Her attention was caught by a particularly large and pretty artificial diamond ring while she was there. The moment she laid eyes on the ring, she knew she had to have it.

Costume jewelry

Although this wasn’t the most convincing piece of costume jewelry because it wasn’t that shiny or bright, nevertheless, this shopper decided that this gorgeous piece of costume jewelry was perfect for her collection. There was no way that she could have known that she was about to seal her fate in literally her own hands or better, fingers. The first thing she did was try out the ring on her finger to see if it would suit her hand. Eventually, it fitted perfectly. She loved how it sits in her hand, so she decided to purchase it as a gift to her self.

Deal of the Day

If you haven’t heard of car boot sales before, they are the British equivalent of yard sales or flea markets. People set up shops in a parking lot or similar area and sell their second-hand items out of their trunks (called “boots” in British English). Hence the name “car boot sale”. Car boot sales are exactly that. It was going to be a memorable event for this woman.

There are countless stories about finding real bargains at these types of sales, so it was no surprise that this woman knew what she was doing when she managed to barter this ring down to a price of just fifteen dollars.

Even though she knew she had gotten a great deal, she was unaware of what the truth was about the item she had just bought. The only thing that mattered to her was the design of the ring, and that was all she cared about. It wasn’t as if there was any reason for her not to buy it.

Designed for everyday use

Obviously, the main reason for people to buy artificial diamonds instead of real diamonds is the significantly lower price of these diamonds compared to those of real diamonds. There are not many of us who can afford a few thousand dollars for a ring! Every girl out there can wear artificial diamond jewelry, they are beautiful and look just like real diamonds. Today, artificial jewelry is given more priority than ever before due to the fact that it is affordable and stylish. And technology has really improved the quality of lab-grown gemstones, which are really diamonds and not necessary crystals.

Benefits

A good thing about that is that, when your rings and jewelry aren’t that expensive, you will be able to wear them much more often without worrying about losing or damaging them. In addition, the fact that people with artificial ones tend to flaunt them without having to worry about taking care of them is another reason why they tend to go for them. And therefore, this woman wore her ring almost every day for almost 30 years after purchasing it.

In addition to wearing her ring almost every day, this woman also wore it when she was out and about, doing her daily activities. Head of Sotheby’s London jewelry department Jessica Wyndham spoke to the BBC about the ring’s regular use. “The owner would wear it out shopping, wear it day-to-day,” she said. “It’s a good-looking ring.”

Why this story made it to the deadlines?

But why would you consider wearing a ring for your everyday activities to be strange? And why was it that a woman from Sotheby’s spoke about that in the news? It is pretty obvious that the ring that she chose to buy last week from the car boot sale was something special, and therefore that is primarily why she was on the news the other day, as well as the reason you are currently reading about the story. After all, the ring must have been made of crystal of that price!
Read on to find out the twist in the tale.

The Dirty Diamond

She knew she was buying an old and artificial diamond when she bought her beautiful ring at the car boot sale. The diamond wasn’t a real diamond, not only because she bought it from someone’s trunk for $15, but also because it didn’t look like one. While the ring was pretty, it didn’t have the sparkle or shine of real diamonds.

The woman at the car boot sale didn’t really think much about buying this ring. The piece of jewelry matched well with her collection and she thought it was a nice-looking piece. She mistakenly assumed it to be an accessory rather than a piece of jewelry because it was so big and clearly fake.

Advice that was unexpected

The woman who made the purchase of the ring wore it happily for many years, as part of her everyday life and activities. Because it meant so much to her, she never thought about how much it would be worth in terms of money-it was just an accessory to her. Even though she wore it every day, she never paid enough attention to it to realize there was more to it.

She bought the ring about 30 years ago, but a jeweler glanced at it about 30 years later and recommended she get it checked. This jeweler thought the humble ring might actually be worth a lot more than the woman had originally thought.

According to Wyndham, the piece was purchased as a costume jewel. Nobody knew it had any intrinsic value. While they had been enjoying it all this time, the ring’s owner was about to receive a piece of advice that would change her life forever.

In search of Sotheby’s

It was clear what she needed to do as soon as she spoke with the jeweler, who suggested this ring might actually contain a real diamond. So she went to the renowned auction house in London, Sotheby’s, to ask for help determining the true value of the ring. Her decision to go to Sotheby’s proved to be the right one.

“They believed it might be real,” Wyndham said. “They had no idea what it was worth.” No one knew what they were about to discover. When they brought the ring to Sotheby’s for testing and valuation, they were one step closer to finding out the truth about the much-loved ring. Truth be told, the ring was so rare and special even Sotheby’s needed a little extra help.

The Discovery

Everyone was utterly shocked to learn the true results after the ring returned from the testing center. It turned out that the ring that the woman had been wearing for 30 years was not a costume item, but a genuine diamond ring that had been part of her favorite jewelry collection for 30 years. She hadn’t been wearing an ordinary artificial ring for all these years.

To ensure the correct value for each item, the auction house works with many other places. Wyndham said they had examined the stone before sending it to the Gemological Institute of America for testing. So what exactly would they find across the pond? It was not only a genuine diamond, it was a 26-carat diamond as well! There was more to it than that, though.

The Shock

She was completely astonished to discover that what she had been thinking was a normal ring for so many years was so much more than that. Testing revealed that this is not only a 26 carat diamond, but also a white cushion-shaped gem. She was surprised to learn that. She had actually bought a diamond ring at the car boot sale!

Not only that, but the testers also found that the precious jewel may have been created during the 19th century. Just by looking at it, how could they tell that the woman was utterly shocked? A procedure existed to determine the approximate age of a gem, and from that, they could tell hers was an old find. A huge surprise awaited the woman, she had no idea what was on her finger.

Stunned by this news

Besides being totally astonished by the truth behind her much-loved ring, the woman was also astonished by herself. The ring had been on her finger for more than three decades. The beauty and rarity of this diamond were beyond her comprehension. Had she known how much this ring was worth, she could have done so much with it.

Wyndham also revealed that the couple had been to several car boot sales over the years. How could this bargain hunter and seasoned shopper fail to see that she was holding a real diamond? Additionally, the fact that she bought it for such a low price led her to doubt its authenticity. She had no idea that this piece of jewelry was a masterpiece.

An expert’s eye

One wonders how this woman, a seasoned shopper and jewelry lover, could have kept that ring on her finger for 30 years without noticing its significance. However, this woman could not have noticed anything unusual about her ring. Many people lack the expertise to distinguish between a real and an artificial jewel.

“They don’t have a history of collecting antiques,” explained Wyndham. In these cases, you need an expert to reveal the truth. “And they don’t have any history of collecting diamonds.” A second revelation followed. The woman was shocked by her purchase. The ring had taken on new meaning for her.

Reasons

It’s amazing to think that we, as everyday people, cannot see that a true piece of genuine precious stone can be a part of our everyday jewelry collection. This isn’t even the only reason this woman didn’t discover the true meaning of her special ring. Although she loved the ring, she didn’t know its value. However, she cared for it a lot since it was her favorite.

A second reason was that the ring was made in the 19th century, when diamonds were cut very differently. How were diamonds cut differently then? Also, this explains why the ring this woman bought from the car boot sale was quite large. A part of what attracted her was that it was different than most contemporary rings.

Some history

As this diamond ring dates back to the 19th century, diamonds were cut very differently during that time. As a matter of fact, today we view the value of a diamond very differently than people did in the 19th century. In order to understand how this ring could have been created so differently, we have to think about how times have changed in the diamond business over the centuries.
We hear you ask, aren’t diamonds always sparkling? Wyndham gave a detailed explanation of how the industry works today, explaining, “The diamond cutter aims to maximize the amount of brilliance from the stone because that’s what makes it sparkle.” Did diamond merchants not care about sparkle in the 19th century? Diamonds also lost their sparkle because of the way they were cut back then.

Size Matters they say

It’s amazing to think that today, the value of a diamond is determined by its brilliance and sparkle. However, back in the 19th century, people viewed diamonds differently. Wyndham explained that weight and size were more important than sparkliness. According to Wyndham, diamond cutting in those days was “slightly duller and deeper than it would be today.”

Additionally, she said that the way it was cut “could fool people into thinking it’s not a genuine stone”. “With an old style of cutting, an antique cushion shape, the light doesn’t reflect back as much as it would from a modern stone cutting,” she said. “Cutters worked more with the natural shape of the crystal, conserving as much weight as possible rather than making it as brilliant as possible.”

Real Personality

Despite the fact that these older stones may not glimmer and sparkle the way modern diamonds do, they still have their own sort of beauty. You just have to see them from a different perspective. However, it doesn’t make sense — why would someone cut a diamond in order to make it look less valuable? Historically, people didn’t care about the sparkle of a diamond.

As for the diamonds cut and made in the 19th century, Wyndham said they have quite a bit of character. “They sparkle differently.” It’s amazing that even something as simple as a style can conceal the true worth of a diamond. Back then, people were more concerned about the size and design of the diamond than about its sparkle. The bigger the diamond, the better.

Rarity

People were shocked to discover the true nature of this diamond ring after this amazing discovery. Therefore, people couldn’t help but wonder: just how common is it to find an everyday diamond is actually a gem? The ring was worn like any other artificial ring, and yet she did not lose or break it. Her sense of keeping jewelry is admirable.

In fact, Wyndham explained that not only was this an unusual occurrence, but it hardly ever occurs. “This is a one-off windfall,” she explained. “It’s an amazing find.”. The majority of us cannot even imagine owning a diamond of that size. It was pure luck that brought the 19th-century diamond to her finger from a regular car boot sale, at that too, at such an affordable price.

Questions

There was another question on everyone’s lips after the incredible discovery of this diamond’s true nature. Despite the stunning story of the diamond, everyone still wanted to know the real question – just how much was the mysterious diamond really worth? The same question was asked by the woman.

Accordingly, the ring was given to Sotheby’s for auction preparation. The true value of the stone would finally be revealed once it was sold under the hammer. Wyndham was so curious to learn the actual value of the 19th-century ring she had worn for over 30 years. Her wait finally came to an end as the price of the ring was close to being determined.

The Expectations

The entire world was eagerly awaiting to see how much this unexpected piece of history would be worth. Jessica Wyndham would of course be interested from a professional standpoint to see what sort of price such a rare find might command. Because she was not living a lavish lifestyle, she was considering selling the house for a good price.

It could be a life-changing discovery for the woman who bought it so many years ago at a car boot sale. As a result, the question remained: just how much money was this diamond worth? It was truly a race against time for everyone involved in the incredible story of this ring to discover its true value. Wyndham was eager to finally solve this amazing mystery, and she simply wanted to know how much money she could get.

Money talking

Even though they were excited about the possibilities, no one was prepared for the true amount that would shock them. This modest ring was estimated to be worth $455,000. Almost half a million dollars! Estimation is one thing, but actual value is another. How much did the ring cost in the end? That’s a million-dollar question!

It turns out that this ring was sold for a bit more than expected at Sotheby’s auction in June 2017. That’s amazing! According to Sotheby’s official Twitter account, the ring sold for a whopping £657,000. That’s more than 900,000 dollars! How amazing is that? She certainly had so much money without knowing it.

Life-Changing Discovery

Is it really true that this ring which has been worn regularly and casually for so many years, and bought at a car boot sale, is worth almost a million dollars? This makes you want to go through your attic and find some hidden treasures, doesn’t it? This woman unknowingly wore a fortune on her finger. It was so important to her to take good care of it.

When she learned the price of the ring, she was eager to visit the car boot sale again. “It’s a life-changing amount of money,” Wyndham agreed. “No matter what your background is or what your past experiences have been, it’s going to revolutionize someone’s life”. What did the owner of the ring have in store for the rest of her life? At the car boot sale, she hoped to find another item like that.

The woman behind the story

Even though this woman had gone through an incredible experience, and the story of her much-loved ring’s journey and its hidden meaning had made headlines around the world, she chose a rather unusual route when it came to sharing her story. She was considering something. Find out what this woman wanted to accomplish and how she wanted to tell her story…

Despite her desire for the world to know what happened, this woman chose to remain anonymous-letting only the story of her experiences be reported on, without revealing her identity. What made her choose to remain anonymous? Despite not revealing her identity to the public, she chose to share her story with the BBC. The BBC respected her decision.

A MIRACLE

Despite being delighted by what had happened, the ring owner did not want her identity published in the newspapers and her identity known to everyone. Maybe she hid her sudden wealth because she was a little shy, or because she didn’t want to invite security risks. Her intention was to remain in the shadows as much as possible.

However, Wyndham revealed that the mysterious woman was ecstatic and “incredibly excited,” just as anyone would be in her position. Her decision not to reveal her identity to the public was a wise one, as she preferred not to gain popularity and invite any risks. She is an enlightened person.

Fate?

All those years ago, this woman simply picked up a ring from a bargain bin and slipped it on her finger. In the case of a cheap piece of jewelry, what are the chances you will hold onto it for almost three decades, not removing it from your finger? She had no idea what she was buying would change her life forever.

When you think about it, it’s a remarkable piece of luck that she didn’t lose this goldmine at some point in time. According to Wyndham, this was the result of serendipity. However, there could have been other factors at play. Making that purchase on an ordinary day at the car boot sale ended up being the best decision of the woman’s life.

Special Diamond

Despite the fact that this diamond was so old that it had been cut differently, when you looked at it with the right perspective, it still held its own beauty. This is because it was a real diamond and not an artificial piece of jewelry. Everybody knows that diamonds never go out of style. In the 19th century, this ring would have been just as valuable as it was today.

Diamonds never get too old! And this is also why diamonds tend to pass from generation to generation, from mom to daughter since forever. It doesn’t expire or go bad!

Diamonds Sparkles

Perhaps, it didn’t have the same sparkle and gleam of today’s modern diamonds, but it was still special-and perhaps it just took the right person to notice its power. “Maybe that 26-carat, cushion-shaped diamond still speaks to people, no matter how filthy or dark that mount was,” Wyndham contemplated. This special item appealed to her heart.

Let’s not forget that 26-carats is also huge! Most women wear up to 3 carats. 26 carats is not even the full collection!
For the average person in the U.S., any diamond at least between 2 and 2.4 carats is considered “big” Imagine wearing a 26 carats!!!

The chances

Throughout the world, the story of this woman and her secretly very valuable ring spread. Despite our fantasies, it’s not common for one of our everyday objects to bring us riches, but it does happen from time to time. An object dating back to the 19th century worth millions is not something you encounter on a regular basis.

Yet this now-famous car boot sale also had some other hidden gems on that fateful day all those years ago. “They also bought designer dresses for about $10,” Wyndham revealed. “We should have all been at the car sale!“ It was a lucky day for the people who went to the car boot sale, and the woman who bought the ring was one of them.

Dream Big

Many of us dream of stumbling upon great wealth one day or discovering a long-hidden secret of the past. A woman inadvertently did both – and hit headlines around the world as a result. Luckily, she discovered that she was wearing a fortune ring before it was too late, as it could have.

She did not seek fame, wealth, or glory – it simply came to her as she lived her daily life. In other words, no matter what walk of life we may be in, a miracle can happen to anyone. The only thing we need to do is keep our hearts pure and help those who are in need.
