Isn’t it surprising when the things we believe are out of our reach can be found easily at the most unexpected places, like auctions?
It’s actually true. Auctions are great avenues to access unique items (or used costly items) for very reasonable prices. And of course, if one is lucky enough, one can get their hands on a prized possession!

A typical example of this setting is a car auction. Car auctions can many times help buyers, especially bargain hunters, land some great deals.
And according to surveys, they are great for regular car buyers as well. Particularly in times like today when the world is still trying to dodge the deadly virus’ killing spree, most people don’t actually want to hop from showroom to showroom and dealer to dealer to find their coveted model. An online car auction serves many purposes in such a scenario.
But of course, to really come out a winner at a car auction, you should know how things work at them and also have a few aces up your sleeves!
First things first – How much can you actually save?
NerdWallet’s automotive columnist Phil Reed suggests that people should have an adventurous spirit. He says if a person is a bargain hunter and has some knowledge about cars, he can save a good sum of money by buying a pre-owned car at an auction.
He estimates that on a 5-year-old mid-size vehicle, an individual can save up to $3000, but he needs to remember that this saved money will be gone by the time he has paid the registration fees and other essential charges.

Moreover, in the case of an online auction, the savings can sometimes be negligible since all that you might have seen are photos and descriptions of the car, which might not be accurate.
As such, there might be a chance of being fooled. Therefore, Reed suggests people should pursue beneficial deals, not just money-savers.
Will the everyday car buyer even be allowed to enter a car auction?
When it comes to car auctions, you should always keep in mind that you’re not the only one looking for a good deal at such a place. Usually, licensed dealers (even the public ones) are your biggest competitors. For instance, an SUV which you have been eyeing on for a long time can be their favorite too.

Further, sometimes situations can be more challenging, like auctions that are reserved for licensed dealers only. In such cases, you might want to sneak in with a fake dealer’s license but believe us, that would be a blunder.
What you can do instead is hire a broker who’ll bid on your behalf. Reed says lots of people have succeeded with this plan, but he even warns about involving a middleman who would charge you a hefty fee.
