GARTH BROOKS AND SANDY MAHL – 15 YEARS – GROWING APART

When country icon Garth Brooks met his first wife, Sandy Mahl, during their time at Oklahoma State University, they seemed to be the perfect match. She stood by his side as he climbed the heights of fame, releasing hit albums like “No Fences” and “In Pieces.” Unfortunately, it was this same success that caused troubles in their relationship.

With Brooks constantly on the road to tour, the couple eventually grew apart. They officially parted ways in 2001 after 15 years of marriage. Mahl, who received a $125 million sum upon their split, remains friendly with Brooks as he continues to perform at venues like the famed Grand Ole Opry in 2021.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux initially met in 2007 while filming Tropic Thunder. Wanderlust reunited them in 2011, and that’s when they became romantically involved. They were hitched in 2015 at a private ceremony hosted at their home in Bel Air. Just over two years later, and the romance had fizzled, leading them to seek the services of attorneys to restore their respective single statuses.

A source told E! News that incompatibility issues marred their relationship right from the start, but they didn’t quite see it because they were blinded by love. Aniston has been keeping busy with her perfume collection; she launched Solstice Bloom and Silver in 2020.

USHER RAYMOND AND GRACE MIGUEL – 2 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

In September 2015, Usher married his manager and long-time girlfriend, Grace Miguel, on vacation in Cuba. They kept it quiet, but speculations were rife on social media after Miguel posted an Instagram photo showing Usher wearing a gold wedding band. In 2017 Usher faced a series of lawsuits when multiple women alleged that he infected them with the herpes virus.

He also faced allegations of fraud, battery, and other charges related to not disclosing his status to his previous partners. By March 2018, Usher and Miguel announced their separation, and Usher filed later in December. Usher and his current girlfriend Jenn Goicoechea welcomed a daughter in September 2020.

BEN STILLER AND CHRISTINE TAYLOR – 20 YEARS MARRIED – UNKNOWN

Ben Stiller and Christine Tayor spent 18 years together and 17 years married before deciding to go their separate ways. The two defied the odds and didn’t remain a permanent statistic of failed relationships in Hollywood for too long. They were spotted several times in 2019, including gracing the Emmy’s red carpet together.

According to a source who spoke to Closer Weekly, the couple never got to the filing stage to restore their respective single statuses. They remained dedicated parents even after splitting up, but the two haven’t publicly commented on their relationship status.

CHRIS MARTIN AND GWYNETH PALTROW – 10 YEARS MARRIED – GRUELING SCHEDULES & DISTANCE

Coldplay band member, Chris Martin, and Gwyneth Paltrow met backstage in 2002. The next year they wedded in Southern California, while Paltrow was pregnant with their first child. In 2006, a second child joined the family. They announced the decision to end their marriage in 2014, with Paltrow iconically describing the process as a “conscious uncoupling. 

They also cited grueling work schedules and distance as some of the reasons behind their split. The proceedings took two years, but Paltrow had already moved on to a relationship with her current husband, Brad Falchuk. In 2020, Paltrow took us behind the scenes of her wellness company through the docu-series The Goop Lab.

RYAN SWEETING AND KALEY CUOCO – 21 MONTHS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

After a six-month courtship, Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting walked down the aisle on New Year’s Eve of 2013. They made it through 21 months before figuring that it wasn’t working, and they legally separated in May 2016. Cuoco later revealed that Sweeting’s alleged prescription pill habit is ultimately what ended their marriage. 

They had a prenup in place, and Sweeting walked away with $165K from the settlement and another $195K payment for his personal trainers. She got hitched to her second husband, Karl Cook, in June 2018. Cuoco has a starring role in the 2021 film The Man from Toronto.

WILL KOPELMAN AND DREW BARRYMORE – 4 YEARS MARRIED – DIFFERENCES IN VALUES

Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman walked down the aisle in 2012, and their union resulted in two daughters. Barrymore openly talked about suffering from postpartum depression over the course of their marriage. Barrymore described their unexpected split in 2016 as her worst nightmare.

It was Barrymore’s third failed marriage, and she explained that she previously didn’t cope well with ending her previous unions. Momager Kris Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner before transitioning to a female, tied the knot in April 1991. The Kardashian-Jenner family matriarch and patriarch called it quits in 2013. Kris filed a legal petition to separate in 2014, citing irreconcilable differences for their split. 

They finalized in 2015, and reportedly they never had a prenuptial agreement. They expedited the proceedings as much as possible and negotiated on various financial matters like their daughter Kylie’s private school tuition. Caitlyn got a $2.5 million settlement out of it. Kris has been dating Corey Gamble since 2014.

BLAKE SHELTON AND MIRANDA LAMBERT – 5 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

A duet performance in 2005 for Country Music Television is where Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton’s friendship started. Shelton was still hitched to Kaynette Gern, and he waited until they split up in 2006 before he started seeing Lambert. They got engaged four years later and had their big day in 2011.

They were involved in a long-distance marriage due to Shelton’s work commitment to The Voice and touring to promote his music. Their relationship got on its last legs in 2015, and they went their separate ways. Shelton and Gwen Stefani got engaged in October 2020, following their five-year courtship.

GAVIN ROSSDALE AND GWEN STEFANI – 13 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Before Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton became the cutest celebrity couple we’ve seen yet, Gavin Rossdale was in the picture. Stefani and Rossdale crossed paths in 1995 when No Doubt opened for Bush, Rossdale’s band. They dated for a little over six years before making it official in 2002, New Year’s Day.

Their union resulted in three children, and after they split in 2015, part of their settlement involves having joint custody over their sons. Stefani and Shelton are yet to set a date for their nuptials, and Stefani told Ryan Seacrest during a 2020 interview all she wants is for her parents to attend the big day.

MARC ANTHONY AND JENNIFER LOPEZ – 10 YEARS MARRIED – THEY GREW APART

Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez sang to the tune of each other’s heart, leading them down the altar in 2004. They grew their family in 2008, welcoming twins Emme and Maximilian. Anthony and Lopez teamed up on investments as well, including going for a stake in the Miami Dolphins and purchasing two Brooksville abodes.

They truly broke our hearts when they shared their intentions to dissolve their marriage in 2011. They filed the next year and finalized in 2014, with Lopez maintaining primary custody of their sons. Lopez got engaged to Alex Rodriguez in 2019, but they postponed their big day scheduled for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

BEN AFFLECK AND JENNIFER GARNER – 10 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Pearl Harbor is the romantic war drama that introduced Ben Affleck to Jennifer Garner. They established a friendship and became an item in mid-2004. Four years later, the two had their nuptials in Turks and Caicos. Their ceremony was super private with only two guests; Victor Garber, the officiator, and his partner Rainer Andreesen. 

In June 2015, Affleck and Garner announced their separation, after a decade-long marriage that had borne three children. They filed jointly in 2017, and the proceedings were concluded in October 2018. Admirably, the two remain close and even go on holiday with their kids. TOM CRUISE AND KATIE HOLMES – 5 YEARS MARRIED – DIFFERENCES IN IDEOLOGIES

Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes in 2006, after a year-long courtship. That was when he appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and proceeded to jump up and down the couch declaring his undying love for Holmes. Holmes and Cruise had their daughter Suri, and just a month later, they tied the knot in Italy. 

Whispers suggest that the Church of Scientology arranged the union, and the institution is also ultimately what ended the marriage. Homes filed to end her marriage to Cruise in 2012. Holmes has been dating Emilio Vitolo Jr., a chef, since 2020.

BRAD PITT AND ANGELINA JOLIE – 4 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie delivered an unforgettable and electrifying performance in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, much that we could see their chemistry was evident. Pitt was a married man while they were filming, but once his union with Jennifer Aniston ended in 2005, he started seeing Jolie.

The pair got hitched in August 2014, after dating for nearly a decade. Two years after enjoying marital bliss, Pitt and Jolie couldn’t make it last. Jolie filed to dissolve the marriage citing irreconcilable differences. They had their single statuses restored in April 2019, but as of August 2020, the process of legally dissolving their marriage in totality is ongoing.

RICHARD GERE AND CINDY CRAWFORD – 4 YEARS MARRIED – INCOMPATIBILITY

While Sandra Bullock played Richard Gere’s on-screen paramour, he found his real-life “Pretty Woman” in Cindy Crawford—minus the call girl part. They tied the knot in 1991, and the media couldn’t get enough of them, partly because she was 22 at the time and dominating the runways. 

Their marriage ended in 1995, and Crawford would later admit that they never spent much time together throughout their marriage. Their 17-year age gap had a hand in it, and as Crawford told Oprah Winfrey during an interview in 2013, he was already 37. Gere and his current wife, Alejandra Silva, welcomed their second child in April 2020.

JOHNNY DEPP AND AMBER HEARD – 1 YEAR MARRIED – ABUSIVE MARRIAGE

The love between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard brewed in 2011, and they were living together in 2012. Three years later, they made it official through a civil ceremony, but just one year into their nuptials, Heard filed for a split and obtained a restraining order against Depp.

Heard alleged that Depp had been verbally and physically abusive during their marriage. She later dropped the restraining order, but Depp went after The Sun in 2020. He was seeking legal redress because the publication had referred to him as a “wife-beater.” The case didn’t end in his favor, perhaps backing Heard’s claims.

CHANNING TATUM AND JENNA DEWAN – 9 YEARS MARRIED – THEY GREW APART

The 2006 movie Step Up brought Channing Tatum and Jeena Dewan together. Sparks flew, and they started dating shortly after. Three years later, they walked down the aisle, and in 2013, they welcomed a daughter called Everly. The couple surprised us with news that they were separating in April 2018. 

Dewan filed six months later, and by November of 2019, they were divorced. She talked about the ordeal in her 2019 memoir and summed up the reason for their split as realizing that their dynamic wasn’t serving her or her daughter. Dewan welcomed a son with Steve Kazee in 2020.

SEAL AND HEIDI KLUM – 9 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Henry Adeola Samuel, better known by his stage name Seal, and Heidi Klum met when she was expecting her first child with her ex Flavio Briatore. They got engaged that year, and in 2005 they were saying “I Do” on a Mexican beach.

They had three children, and in 2009, Seal adopted Helene—Briatore and Klum’s daughter. They warmed our hearts each year with details about their vow renewals when they celebrated their anniversaries. It all came to an end in 2012, and they officially dissolved their marriage in 2014. Klum married her second husband, Tom Kaulitz, in August 2019.

NICK CANNON AND MARIAH CAREY – 8 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey shocked friends, family, and fans when they tied the knot in 2008 after dating briefly. They secretly had their nuptials in the Bahamas, and three years later, they welcomed Monroe and Moroccan. They ended their marriage legally in 2016, and they continue to co-parent their twins. 

Cannon told Good Morning America that they worked because Carey dominating the spotlight didn’t bother him. There was never any competition between them, and he never had a problem falling back. In her 2020 publication, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” she confessed feeling safe with Cannon compared to her allegedly controlling former husband, Tommy Mottola.

DAVID DUCHOVNY AND TÉA LEONI – 17 YEARS MARRIED – IRRETRIEVABLE BREAKDOWN

David Duchovny filed to end his marriage with Téa Leoni in June 2014, citing the relationship’s “irretrievable breakdown” as the reason for their split. Duchovny married Leoni in 1997, and they share two children. They separated in 2008, the same year when Duchovny sought treatment for being addicted to the act of intimacy.

 Claims surfaced that he had stepped out on his marriage with Edit Pakay, a Hungarian tennis instructor. Duchovny and Leoni briefly got back together in 2009, but they split up again and officially parted in 2014. Duchovny suffered from COVID-19 symptoms in November 20201, and says that he feels fortunate to have recovered.

Brandon Blackstock And Kelly Clarkson – 8 Years – Irreconcilable Differences

In 2002, Kelly Clarkson made history by becoming the first winner of “American Idol.” She’s been working professionally as a music artist ever since. She’s also a popular TV personality, known for her work as a “The Voice” coach and “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

Clarkson tied the knot with the talent manager Brandon Blackstock in 2013. Blackstock was not just Clarkson’s husband, but he was also her manager! Nonetheless, these two managed to keep it together for eight years before filing for divorce in 2020, citing “irreconcilable differences.” They have a daughter and a son. Following the divorce, Clarkson mentioned they both deserved “the opportunity to build a new life.”

ORLANDO BLOOM AND MIRANDA KERR – 3 YEARS MARRIED – THEY DRIFTED APART

Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr kept the process of their uncoupling amicable, and they continue to speak highly about their marriage during interviews. The two got together in 2007, and in 2010 Kerr had a dazzling ring on her finger. They married just a month after, and in 2011 their son Flynn joined the family.

Sadly, just two years later, they decided to end their marriage. Kerr married her second husband, Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel, and they share two children. Bloom has been involved in a relationship with Katy Perry since 2016, and they got engaged in 2019. Bloom and Perry welcomed a daughter in August 2020.

RUSSELL BRAND AND KATY PERRY – 1 YEAR MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

In just 14 months, Russell Brand and Katy Perry had had it. The pair made it to the altar in 2010. Brand ended their union on New Year’s Eve of 2011 via a text informing Perry that he planned to end their marriage. Speaking with 60 Minutes Australia, Perry likened her marriage to Brand to a tornado. 

The silver lining is that Perry has now settled down with Bloom, and they are focussing on raising their daughter Daisy Dove. It’s only a matter of time before Bloom and Perry reschedule their nuptials after canceling their summer date in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

TIGER WOODS AND ELIN NORDEGREN – 6 YEARS MARRIED – INFIDELITY

The eye-popping articles published in celebrity news sites in 2019 recounted an incident involving Tiger Woods and his then-wife Elin Nordegren wielding a golf club. The two were engaged in a heated argument that took a turn for the worse, and while fleeing from the scene, Woods crashed his Escalade into a tree. 

Woods would then admit that he had been carrying on multiple extramarital affairs over the course of his marriage to Nordegren. Nordegren and Woods officially had their six-year marriage dissolved in 2010, and she reportedly got a $110 million settlement. Nordegren and her current beau Chris Cline had their first child together in October 2019.

SEAN PENN AND ROBIN WRIGHT – 14 YEARS MARRIED – DIFFERENT ETHICAL VIEWS ON PARENTING

The relationship between Sean Penn and Robin Wright was tumultuous, to say the least. They started dating in 1989 following Penn and Madonna’s split. Penn and Wright carried on an on-and-off romance for the better part of a decade. They finally cemented their union in 1996, and 14 years later, they called it quits.

Penn later spoke about having ethical differences when it came to continuing parenting their children Dyland and Hopper, who are now in their 20s, into adulthood. Penn has been involved in a relationship with Leila George since 2016.

PAUL MCCARTNEY AND HEATHER MILLS – 4 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Heather Mills and Sir Paul McCartney had a fairy tale ceremony held at a remote Glaslough castle. Their four-year marriage didn’t end on a chivalrous note, but instead, in one historically volatile and public legal battle. Their happier days were preceded by bumping into each other at a 1999 charity event. 

Mills claimed that she helped McCartney overcome grief after losing his former wife Linda, who had lost the battle to cancer in 1998. McCartney cited Mills’ argumentative and unreasonable behavior while Mills accused him of emotional and physical abuse. McCartney released his 19th solo album in December 2020.

GUY RITCHIE AND MADONNA – 8 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Guy Ritchie and Madonna exchanged vows at the Skibo Castle in December 2000. They had welcomed their son Rocco early in the year, and in 2006 they adopted their son David from Malawi. Madonna filed in 2008, citing Ritchie’s unreasonable behavior. The settlement granted Ritchie between $60 and $80 million, including the value of the London pub they jointly owned. 

However, Ritchie and Madonna later issued a joint statement saying that the settlement figure was inaccurate and misleading. They had their marriage dissolved in a record six weeks, and they also reached an amicable custody agreement. Madonna teamed up with Missy Elliot and Dua Lipa to remix “Levitating” in 2020.

RYAN PHILLIPE AND REESE WITHERSPOON – 10 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe spent seven years married, but in 2006 they ended their union. They finalized in 2009, and Witherspoon had cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind their split. The two met during Witherspoon’s 21st birthday party, and just a year later, in 1998, they shared the screen in Cruel Intentions. 

By 1999 they were walking down the aisle and exchanging vows at the Old Wide Plantation near Charleston, South Carolina. Witherspoon was expecting their daughter Ava when they got hitched, and in 2003 they welcomed a son. Recently, Whitherspoon produced and co-starred, alongside Kerry Washington, in the 2020 Hulu miniseries Little Fires Everywhere.

KID ROCK AND PAMELA ANDERSON – 1 YEAR MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

In 2006, Pamela Anderson walked down the aisle to marry Robert Ritchie, better known as Kid Rock, making it her second shot at marriage. Speculations surrounded their union, with the rumor being that their nuptials had been motivated by a bun in the oven. One year after they wed and split up, Anderson revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage. 

Four months into their marriage, Anderson filed to separate from Ritchie, citing irreconcilable differences. Anderson also disclosed in 2007 that they had maintained a physically intimate relationship hoping to rekindle their relationship, but it didn’t work. Anderson and producer Jon Peters got hitched in February 2020.

JENNIFER ANISTON AND BRAD PITT – 5 YEARS MARRIED – ALLEGED INFIDELITY

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were one of Hollywood’s power couples in the ’90s. They were hounded by the paparazzi following their nuptials in 2000. Sadly, five years after they promised to “love and cherish,” they were divorced. Rumors flying around implied that Angelina Jolie and Pitt had gotten entangled after meeting on the set in 2005, while Pitt was still married. 

Pitt and Jolie have always maintained that their relationship was strictly professional. They were quick to get together once Pitt had inked his initials on the papers dissolving his union with Aniston. Pitt narrated a presidential campaign ad for Joe Biden in October 2020.

DENNIS QUAID AND MEG RYAN – 10 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

On Valentine’s Day of 1991, Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid got hitched. They met while filming D.O.A, which was their second film together, and the sparks flew. Henry Quaid, who is a successful actor in his own right, is their son. In June 2000, Ryan and Quaid announced their split. 

They finalized in 2001, and Quaid later told The Independent that his personal struggles didn’t help. He had a cocaine problem, and good roles had dried up. With the press getting wind of it and hounding them down, their relationship suffered. Quaid married Laura Savoie in June 2020, after pushing their nuptials from April due to the pandemic.

TOM CRUISE AND NICOLE KIDMAN – 9 YEARS MARRIED – IRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Days of Thunder is a 1989 flick starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. After spending a considerable amount of time filming the drama, the two exchanged vows the next year in Telluride, Colorado. Their family grew when they adopted Conor Anthony and Isabelle Jane.

Their love faded out, and 72 hours before they were scheduled to celebrate their tenth anniversary, a spokesperson announced their split. Kidman reportedly didn’t know about the turn of events, and Cruise strategically chose the particular moment to dissolve their marriage so that he could avoid the heftier costs that would have come with their split. Kidman appeared in the 2020 Netflix film The Prom.

EMILIO ESTEVEZ AND PAULA ABDUL – 2 YEARS MARRIED – ALLEGED INFIDELITY

Emilio Estevez met Paula Abdul when she was involved with John Stamos, but he later called to express his admiration for her work. He kept calling regularly, and in 1991 they both happened to be staying at The Plaza Hotel. Estevez suggested they meet for dinner, and six months later, he popped the big question.

A private ceremony held in 1992 cemented their relationship. Two years later, it all came tumbling down, and People magazine reported that an alleged dalliance Estevez had might have led to their split. Abdul is set to serve as a panelist for The Masked Dancer, an upcoming Fox reality competition show.

KENNY CHESNEY AND RENÉE ZELLWEGER – 4 MONTHS MARRIED – FRAUD

For a short while, country music star Kenny Chesney and Renée Zellweger were married. They met at the start of 2005 during NBC’s Concert of Hope telethon. They tied the knot just about four months after initially meeting at the Virgin Islands. Four months following their nuptials, Zellweger cited fraud while filing for an annulment.

Publications translated her statement as a confirmation of the alleged rumor that Chesney was gay. They both jointly denied it, explaining that the “fraud” referred to the miscommunication they had about the intention for the marriage. Zellweger’s relationship with Doyle Bramhall lasted from 2012 to 2019.

MARIO LOPEZ AND ALI LANDRY – 2 WEEKS – INFIDELITY

After a six-year courtship, Mario Lopez married his longtime girlfriend, Ali Landry, in 2004. They annulled their union just two weeks after their nuptials, with the issue being Lopez’s cheating. He even admitted that he had an indiscretion on the night of his bachelor party, days before he exchanged vows with Landry.

Fortunately, Landry found love again when she met Alejandro Monteverde at a theology class. They decided to abstain until marriage, and they wed in 2006. Landry and Monteverde now have two children. Lopez also got hitched to Courtney Mazza, and they have three children together. In 2020, Lopez starred in a short KFC/Lifetime film as Colonel Sanders.

GEENA DAVIS AND JEFF GOLDBLUM – 3 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis co-starred in several ’80s films, including Transylvania 6-5000, Earth Girls Are Easy, and The Fly. They exchanged vows in 1987, and it was the second time for each of them to get married. They worked well both professionally and as a couple because they shared a lot. 

They shared a private acting coach, and they were also known for giving the most strikingly brainy gifts. However, as delightful as they were together, they didn’t last. Three years later, they ended their union with Davis citing irreconcilable differences. Davis ended her two-decade-long relationship with Reza Jarrahy in 2018, revealing that they never legally married.

GARY OLDMAN AND UMA THURMAN – 2 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Several tales exist about how Uma Thurman and Gary Oldman met, with one suggesting that Sean Penn introduced them. They met in 1989 on the set of State of Grace, and Thurman was dating Phil Joanou at the time. Other accounts note that Thurman and Oldman were dating by the time they were filming the movie.

Either way, they got hitched in 1990 and ended things less than two years later. They both shared in later interviews that they consider their marriage a mistake. Thurman had the honor of having a fringe-toed lizard species discovered in 2020 named after her, Uma thurmanae.

NICOLAS CAGE AND PATRICIA ARQUETTE – 6 YEARS MARRIED – IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

Patricia Arquette reportedly had two suitors pursuing her in the late ’80s, when she met Crispin Glover and Nicolas Cage at a Los Angeles deli. Both men apparently told Arquette, who was 19 years old, that they would marry her. Cage followed through and married her in 1995.
