It takes a special kind of spunk and tenacity to be a child star. Those cute ponytails and perfect smiles sure make productions more fun to watch. But how easy can it be to not only be putting up with the complications involved in growing up—and having to do so in the public eye—then having to deal with all the demands of a job? We know how unforgiving and mean the public can be. So in a tough entertainment industry filled with potential pitfalls, some child stars survive, some don’t. Guess that’s what all that health insurance is for. Let’s check out the adventures of some of our favorite child stars.

His career is made of his numerous roles in movies, television shows, video games, advertisements, and so on. Let’s hope that at least one of his children follows their father’s footsteps and makes it even bigger in Hollywood!
Melissa Gilbert – Anti-Cosmetic Surgery Advocate

Many of us were huge fans of Little House on the Prairie, in which Melissa Gilbert starred as Laura Ingalls Wilder. We also remember her from television films such as The Diary of Anne Frank. The latest from the star is that she is pushing natural aging and decries Hollywood pressure on women to look young. Gilbert had removed her breast implants in 2015. In 2018, she told First For Women magazine that she is embracing her age by refusing plastic surgery, shunning Botox and fillers, and encouraging others to do the same.
Jimmy Karz – Retired Actor

You may remember Jimmy Karz as a young actor who portrayed the role of Bruce Bogtrotter in the 1996 film Matilda. Little did we know that it’s going to be his last acting stint. It was reported that Karz decided to focus on his studies and is now on his way to becoming a doctor. With not much on his portfolio, Jimmy joined the short video documentary, Afternoon Tea, a Matilda Reunion, back in 2013.
Larisa Oleynik – Actress

For four years, Larisa Oleynik starred as Alex Mack in the ‘90s children’s TV series The Secret World of Alex Mack. The show made her an instant star. After taking a break after college, she returned to acting and appeared in televisions roles for shows such as Pretty Little Liars and Mad Men. Oleynik’s latest project is a horror thriller, which makes us hope that she has good medical insurance. She plays the lead character, Anita Bishop, in Animal Among Us, a film which will be released in 2018.
Sean O’Neal – Away from the Spotlight

Sean O’Neal from post-Clarissa Explains It All has been keeping it very quiet these days. So what did he do after starring in the Nickelodeon teen sitcom? In 2001, he started voice acting for the anime series Noir and RahXephon. The 42-year-old star also appeared in Penumbra in 2016 and got a small part in the television series Development Hell. He’s had so few small projects and now it’s like he’s vanished off the face of the Earth. It seems that he may have found another way to grow his bank account.
Senta Moses – Actress

Actress Senta Moses made the leap to movies while in high school, grabbing the role of Kevin McCallister’s cousin in Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Over the years, she successfully landed more roles both on film and on television, including Slightly Single in LA. Her last known role was Mrs. Silverstein in the television series Bella and the Bulldogs from 2015 to 2016. Heather O’Rourke – Deceased

Heather O’Rourke is consistently remembered for her role in the 1982 movie Poltergeist. It led to a reprisal of the role in the second and third installments of the movie. O’Rourke also had a recurring role in the TV sitcom Happy Days from 1982 to 1983. Unfortunately, she suddenly died in 1988 at the age of 12 due to cardiac arrest and septic shock. The child star had had a misdiagnosed intestinal stenosis.
Susan Olsen – Radio Talk Show Host

Brady Bunch actress Susan Olsen was born into a family of actors, so acting seemed like the natural thing to do. She played the cute-as-a-button youngest Brady child, Cindy, for 117 episodes. Now Olsen is a radio DJ who has had several talk shows on the Los Angeles airwaves under her belt. Her most recent gig was as a host on Two Chicks Talkin’ Politics. According to the latest celebrity news, it, unfortunately, ended over a spat on social media between her and a guest on the show.
Josh Saviano – Law Career

He then went on to found two companies, law firm JDS Legal and celebrity brand consulting firm Act 3 Advisors. He also appeared in a few episodes of Law & Order between 2014 and 2016.
Tatyana Ali – Actress and Model

Tatyana Ali grew up in front of the cameras on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air before starring in The Young and the Restless and Love That Girl. She also released a studio album, Kiss the Sky. Ali has certainly been busy. Earlier in 2018, she wrapped filming an independent flick, DOE. That’s money she can definitely take to the bank. Then she made her New York Fashion Week debut by walking the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women runway.
Erik Per Sullivan – Private Life

Child actor Erik Per Sullivan had acting roles in Unfaithful, Finding Nemo, and Joe Dirt. He then decided to take a breather to play alto saxophone and piano at the University of Southern California in 2009. But he didn’t entirely stay away from acting, as he briefly re-entered the industry to be seen in the 2010 film Twelve. Sullivan hasn’t done any acting since. It’s still left to be seen if it’s temporary or permanent, but he seems to have transitioned to a private life.
Jeremy Miller – Actor

Being on Growing Pains was a winning move for Jeremy Miller because it made him a star. But though it’s the role he’s best remembered for, it brought him some stalker issues at age 14 and was happy when it got resolved. Thankfully, it didn’t scare him off acting. In 2017, the 40-year-old was in the sci-fi film Aaah! Roach! as well as the horror thriller Awakening. Doing a bit of social media monitoring can definitely help keep you up-to-date on Jeremy’s life.
Mara Wilson – Author and Actress

Mara Wilson charmed everyone in Matilda. But these days, she’s so different. For starters, she came out as a being attracted to both men and women in December 2017. Now on Twitter, she’s trashing scripts for roles offered her. The offending script in question is one she says has a Christian redemption narrative for child actors and implies that they need to be redeemed. Wilson quit acting and mainly makes money as a writer, but sometimes a script will be sent to her.
Jared Rushton – Part of a Band

As a child actor, Jared Rushton is well known for Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Big, and Overboard. He’s also known for Pet Sematary Two. But he lost steam after a few roles. Now an adult, he’s cooling his heels playing guitar in the rock band Deal by Dusk, that his brother Ryan is also a member of. Well, we’re glad it wasn’t something like a heart attack that took him out of the field.
Abraham Benrubi – Voice Acting

Abraham Benrubi first gained his fame in the TV series ER and for playing big bully Larry Kubiac on Parker Lewis Can’t Lose. But Benrubi is not seen in front of the camera these days. Presently, it’s his voice that can be heard on the Adult Swim series Robot Chicken: Star Wars. Roles might have gotten a little scarce for the big guy, so it might not be a bad idea to check out a little investment strategy to keep the cash flow going in the future.
Keshia Knight Pulliam – Rapper

Cute little Rudy Huxtable is all grown up. Keshia Knight Pulliam gained popularity by playing that loveable character in the runaway hit sitcom, The Cosby Show. In 2018, Keshia got divorced from her husband, Ed Hartwell. Well, the lady expressed her feeling through rap, taking digs at him. Her brother Kofa released the track Heat Rises 2 and Pulliam appears on it, dissing Hartwell. Don’t be shocked if she grabs her credit cards and does a little spending to blow off steam!
Gary Coleman – Deceased

Actor, comedian, and writer Gary Coleman rode the coattails of fame during the ‘80s and ‘90s with Diff’rent Strokes. He was even regarded as one of TV’s most promising stars. Unfortunately, he had the wrong wealth management advisor, whom he sued along with his parents later, claiming that his $3.8-million trust fund was mismanaged, and the funds misappropriated. This led him to file for bankruptcy in 1991. Coleman lost his life on May 28, 2010, as a result of an epidural hematoma at the age of 42.
Maia Brewton – Settled Down

Maia Brewton gave the Hollywood scene a good shot, then decided it wasn’t for her. She played the Mighty Thor-obsessed Sara in the 1987 Adventures in Babysitting and Shelly, the antagonistic sister of Parker Lewis, in Parker Lewis Can’t Lose during the early ‘90s. A few roles later saw her graduating from Yale University in 1998 and becoming an attorney. Maybe she just wanted a quieter ‘making money’ strategy. Brewton then married and had a family.
Lindsay Lohan – Entrepreneur

The Parent Trap star Lindsay Lohan’s life has swirled with controversy over the years—from legal trouble to substance abuse to a European accent. But here’s something you might not have expected: Lindsay Lohan owns a beachfront club in Mykonos in the Greek Islands called The Lohan Beach House that was launched in June 2018. We don’t know if she had to take a bank loan to do it, but it’s wildly successful! The actress, who now only does paid interviews and shoots, moved to Dubai to get away from the constant media attention.
Brian Forster – Retired Actor

The Partridge Family yielded a plethora of stars. Among them is Brian Forster who played Chris Partridge in the fictional family. When the sitcom ended in 1974, he restricted his acting to the Northern California community theatre. In 2002-2003, he started dabbling as a race car driver and instructor. Here’s to hoping he has good life insurance while he zips down tracks at high speed, or puts himself around novices who do.
Jeremy Gelbwaks – Business and Technology Planner

Before Brian Forster, Jeremy Gelbwaks played the part of young Chris on The Partridge Family. The official reason given for Jeremy’s leaving was that his father had to relocate the family to another part of the country for work. The unofficial reason was that Jeremy’s behavior on the set was upsetting. So after only one season, Jeremy left acting to study for a technology and business career instead. He matriculated at both the University of Berkeley and Columbia University, and today is a business and technology planner in New Orleans.
Danny Cooksey – Voice Acting and Singing

Another child star from Diff’rent Strokes, Danny Cooksey’s acting career was brief. He had roles in the movie Terminator 2 and TV’s Salute Your Shorts, among others, before doing voice work for cartoons like Static Shock and some video games. Cooksey then set his sights on music and now makes sporadic appearances with L.A. Country and Western band Shelter Dogs, doing guitar and vocals. He might not be making the millions on any one project, but it’s all money in the bank!
Robbie Rist – Voice Acting and Music

The Brady Bunch star Robbie Rist, although cast in the show for the last few episodes, is best known for his role as Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch. Additionally, he’s known for his roles in Doc McStuffins and Final Fantasy X and as the voice of Michelangelo on the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He presently has a net worth of about $300K, which he also earned through singing and playing music in Los Angeles bands.
RJ Mitte – Actor

An appearance on Hannah Montana ignited RJ Mitte’s interest in the film industry. He then enrolled in acting lessons to develop his skills. A role on Breaking Bad as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. saw the realization of his dream. In addition to this, he has appeared on the big and small screen on Weeds, Vegas and even Switched at Birth. He recently starred in the movie The Recall. In 2018, he’s set to star in Now Apocalypse, a half-hour comedy series. He’s also an activist for the cerebral palsy cause, being a sufferer himself.
Sara Gilbert – Hosting/Acting Career

Sara Gilbert got a role in Roseanne as a kid. She’s also acted in other TV shows and in films like The Big Bang Theory and Riding in Cars with Boys. She has been a host, as well as the creator, of The Talk. Earlier this year, Gilbert was a member of the cast of the revived sitcom Roseanne. The show got pulled over an inappropriate tweet lead actress Roseanne Barr directed at Obama administration aide Valerie Jarrett. Gilbert may have experienced the end of Roseanne twice, but she still has a lot on her portfolio.
The Olsen Twins – Fashion Designers

These ladies started their acting career at only 15 months, on Full House. In 1987, they shared the role of Michelle and would take turns on the set. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen as adults are now full-fledged fashion designers for clothes, footwear, handbags, and other accessories. They’ve launched various fashion lines and sell their clothes around the world. The former child actresses have become multi-millionaires just from their fashion business alone.
Fred Savage – Actor

The Wonder Years’ Fred Savage’s first acting role was in Morningstar/Eveningstar. He found other roles on The Princess Bride, Little Monsters, The Twilight Zone, and Goldmember, which were all hits. In 2018, he’s busy playing Max in the series Friends from College and lending his voice to Parker on Bob’s Burgers. He’s also had to be racking up attorney fees defending himself against indecent misconduct charges. The case swung to his side and he’s been acquitted of all charges.
Danny Bonaduce – Radio Personality

Danny Bonaduce started acting as a pre-teen when he was cast on The Partridge Family. Now, he’s a radio show host. Although he’s so well-established now, the ride to where he is now was very shaky. It even saw him going through drug and alcohol abuse and living on the streets of Hollywood. His mother’s plea to clean himself up brought the turnaround. And although he’s still grieving over the death of pal David Cassidy in January 2018, today, he is whole, healthy and happy.
Susan Dey – Retired Actress

Wow! The Partridge Family sure had produced a ton of stars. But then, it was one of the coolest shows of its time. Which child didn’t want to also be singing in the Partridge Family band? Teen Susan Dey played cool-headed, perfectly long-haired Laurie on the show. The 65-year-old then went on to star in LA Law and appear in Third Watch, before retiring in 2004. Dey has been living a completely private life off-camera since her retirement.
Mason Vale Cotton – Acting Career

Mason Vale Cotton clinched the role of MJ Delfino in Desperate Housewives. We then saw him in Mad Men and ER. When we last heard from him, he had voiced Arnold on the TV film Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie in 2017. The 16-year–old hasn’t done anything in entertainment since and seems to be just focusing on being a normal teen. Our social media monitoring sees him posting about regular fun stuff and keeping his nose clean. But we figure he’s just in between projects.
Madison De La Garza – Studying

Madison De La Garza played the young Juanita on Desperate Housewives. In real life, she is the half-sister of singer Demi Lovato. Madison just graduated from high school and posted an amazing picture of her at her prom on Instagram. But apart from studying, she has had a strong social media presence with her own YouTube channel, on which she talks about her life, pets, makeup, and family. Ah, the wonders of technology!
Billy Mumy – Acting

Bill Mumy found success as a child actor during the ’60s. He is remembered for The Twilight Zone and Lost in Space, playing young Will Robinson. Flash forward to 2018, he’s acting in a reboot of the sci-fi adventure Lost In Space playing on Netflix. Now 64, he plays a different role than he did in the favorite ‘60s show, of course. He plays D. Zachery Smith. An interesting change, we’d say, from playing music with Action Skulls. Hopefully, while he’s busy spending his salary, he won’t forget to pay his taxes.
Khleo Thomas – Fashion Designer

Khleo Thomas has never forgotten his experience making the Disney film, Holes. Thomas commemorated the 15th year anniversary of that movie on Instagram earlier this year by promising to post pictures of himself in the original jumpsuit if his Instagram post got 1,000 comments. He ended up posting three! This proved to be an amazing opportunity for him to boost his streetwear clothes brand Slick Living, which released a line called ZERONI in honor of holes. He promised a signed copy of the Holes DVD for a lucky five customers if they bought a ZERONI piece. The competition was tight!
Olivia Hussey – Writing Her Memoir

Hussey’s book, The Girl on the Balcony, is slated for release on July 31, 2018.
Jacob Reynolds – Quiet Life

Jacob Reynolds is most remembered for his role as Solomon in the movie Gummo. Despite appearing in The Aggression Scale and The Road to Wellville, among other productions, his acting career was clipped short. His last appearance was in the action thriller The Aggression Scale in 2012. Maybe he’s busy being a hands-on parent to his children. Or maybe, he’s fallen back on his skill as a trumpeter and an aviator.
Johnny Whitaker – Drug Counselor

Johnny Whitaker had a booming career in the ’60s and ’70s. He had a long run on Family Affair and became known for acting in Tom Sawyer, General Hospital, and The Littlest Angel. Unfortunately, he developed a drug addiction after his wife left him for the person who’d thrown his bachelor party. He even had a meth addiction during his dark years. Fortunately, his family helped him to recover. Now he works as a substance abuse professional. He’s also writing his memoirs and preparing to direct a film in the fall of 2018.
Robert MacNaughton – Retired

It was more than 30 years ago that a teenage Robert MacNaughton played Michael in the full movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. His performance won him a Young Artist Award for Best Young Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. MacNaughton initially retired from acting in 2002 and became a mail carrier. But in 2013, he returned t0 acting to do the movies Laugh Killer Laugh and Frankenstein vs. The Mummy. He then retired again in 2014.
Kami Cotler – Teacher & Entrepreneur

After she acted in the 1972 sitcom Me and the Chimp, Kami Cotler was cast as young Elizabeth Walton in the series The Waltons at 6 years old. But sadly, her career slumped during the ’80s. She pursued a career as an educator, eventually becoming a principal. Cotler ran her own boutique travel company and managed a café restaurant in San Francisco. The 53-year-old has reprised her role on The Waltons with reunion movies that ran for several years until 2004.
David Krumholtz – Acting

As a teenager, David Krumholtz gave cheer to a lot of kids when he played one of Santa’s helpers in the Santa Clause movie series. Other projects that helped round out his portfolio were roles on Numb3rs and Harold & Kumar. In 2017, Krumholtz worked with director Woody Allen on Wonder Wheel. Then by January 2o18, he tweeted his regret for having done so, after a Washington Post article uncovered personal material that depicted Allen in an unflattering light. It was an act which was considered quite controversial.
Brooke Shields – Still Acting

She’s known for her Suddenly Susan sitcom. However, Brooke Shields was once a child actor whose first roles were in the controversial adult-themed films The Blue Lagoon and Pretty Baby. She was also a beauty icon of the ’80s and appeared in several risqué advertisements like Calvin Klein jeans. In 2018, Shields revealed that she is now comfortable with her own skin at the age of 52. She says it’s about health and fitness. Well, whatever it is, her career is benefitting from it as she’s presently appearing on Jane the Virgin.
Alison Arngrim – Actress And Comedian

We may have her parents to thank for her acting start, but Alison Arngrim had to have the skills to last once she got in. This was evident in her portrayal of 19th-century bully Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie from 1974 to 1981. Now, the lady is still making some cash off that very role in 2018 with her Nasty Nellie Tour. The next stop is at a bookstore called Beyond Baroque in August.
Thylane Blondeau – Still Modeling

Stunning French model Thylane Blondeau started modeling at only 4 years old. Her career really took off even at that age. In 2015, she signed with IMG Models and walked the runway for top fashion designers. This 17-year-old was named brand ambassador for L’Oréal in 2017 and was one of the stars in the Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer 2017 campaign. In December 2017, Thylane placed 2nd in the annual list of 100 most beautiful faces of 2017. A leap from 84th for the previous three consecutive years.
Anna Paquin – Acting

Anna Paquin made waves when she won an Academy Award at age 11 for the movie The Piano. Prime acting roles throughout her teens led her to be seen in both highbrow movies like Amistad and box office hits like 2000’s X-Men. In her twenties, Paquin landed the lead role on True Blood. Sure, her credit card spending increased, but she also ended up marrying her co-star Stephen Moyer in 2010 whom she has two children with. She presently stars in a film directed by her husband called Glass.
Dante Basco – Voice Actor

Dante Basco found stardom in the early ’90s with the movie Hook. He has had a number of guest appearances and been on numerous TV shows, but is very proud of his skills as a voice actor. He was the voice of popular animated show characters like Zuko for Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and Jake Long in Disney Channel’s American Dragon: Jake Long. It seems as if Dante has found his way to affluence in voice acting. In 2017, he applied his talents to another project, Bangarang—a film about his Hook character, Rufio.
Ariana Richards – Painter

Ariana Richards received fame playing Lex Murphy on the blockbuster Steven Spielberg movie Jurassic Park. The adoration continued as she starred in the sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park. With her name now on the map, Richards received acting roles and earnings with relative ease. She seemed to be heading toward an adult acting career. But instead, she pulled up her stumps and went into art instead. However, as a nod to her past, she commemorated the 25th anniversary of Jurassic Park by attending the premiere of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Jacqueline Steiger – Actress

This California native started acting as a little girl. First appearing in the 1996 comedy Matilda, Jacqueline Steiger’s character was the one thrown by her pigtails by Agatha Trunchbull. Though acting was good, Steiger wanted to complete her studies. She attended the University of California and graduated summa cum laude. Steiger says she enjoyed taking classes and working on both sides of the camera. But she has gone back to acting again, and we can’t wait. Cheers to her grand comeback role!
Jonathan Lipnicki – Reality Star

First, he was the adorable kid in Stuart Little. Then, the super smart Jerry McGuire child star. Now, he’s a date. Yes, Jonathan Lipnicki is dating again on the fourth series of the British matchmaking show, Celebs Go Dating. Last season, he dated Becca Mason—even flying her to LA to meet his family and friends. However, they broke up. The producers recently tried pairing the 5-foot-7 Jonathan with a girl deemed as Scotland’s Longest Legs, Stephanie Nicholson. Let’s just say that the search continued. Would this qualify for disaster recovery insurance?
Christian Bale – Acting

Award-winning actor Christian Bale sure has come a long way since Empire of the Sun. He’s usually cast in brooding character roles and is known for even changing his physique, including extreme weight loss, to fit the character. Case in point: he gained a lot of weight for his most recent role, Cheney, in the biopic Backseat. The actor says, however, that at that 43, he’ll need to stop making these body transformations—which gets harder to recover each time. That should put pressure on his health insurance plan!
Alison Pill – Actress

Alison Pill was a child actress who starred in the TV series The Book of Daniel. And now that she’s all grown up, she’s still acting. She started nabbing roles in movies like Midnight in Paris, In Treatment, and The Newsroom. With smart choices such as this, Pill is surely leaving her legacy on Broadway!
Mark Lester – Osteopath

Mark Lester rose to stardom at the end of the ’60s, when he was cast for the lead role in the film Oliver! As a son of two actors, Lester began a career at the age of only six. However, it wasn’t meant to be for the young actor. After one unsuccessful period, he decided to make his retirement from acting official in the ’80s. Lester became an osteopath and opened his own clinic. He is also a proud father of four children!
Aileen Quinn – Singer and Actress

Aileen Quinn started her acting career during the ’80s. She is best known for playing the titular role in the 1982 movie, Annie. Although her career was going amazing, Quinn decided to take a short break from the acting world. She dedicated her time to her studies and got a college degree from Drew University. She returned to television, though, appearing in The Great Space Coaster, The Comeback Kids, and Multiple Sarcasms.
Rowan Witt – Theatre Actor

Surely Matrix fans still remember this Spoon Boy from the film series till today but now he looks quite different. Rowan Witt played the role of this bald boy who helped Neo understand that reality is actually quite different than what he thinks. Rowan gained much fame from the movie and he even starred in 12 episodes on Home And Away. He starred in Adore as well and now he’s known best for being an Australian theatre performer. But what’s so fascinating is that this 30-year-old has become an interest for all the ladies out there today!
Michael Oliver – Living Quietly

Michael Oliver’s mom, Dianne, sure put him in a bit of a pickle! On the eve of filming Problem Child 2, she demanded that Universal Studios increase his salary several times over or she would remove him from production. They did, then sued her in court. She lost, and her son hasn’t acted since 1995. In 2015, it was reported that he was happy with his private life away from the celebrity scene. We know that he wed his longtime girlfriend, Magnolia, in 2016.
