Born in New York, Young Lopez Was Always Meant For Bigger Things

Jennifer Lynn Lopez, as is her full name, was born on the 24th of July, 1969, to David López and Guadalupe Rodríguez, Puerto Rican immigrants who lived in New York City. The family home was a tiny apartment in Castle Hill when Jennifer was brought home. A couple of years later, the family managed to save up enough to afford a two-story house.

Lopez started taking lessons in singing and dancing at the age of five. When she started studying at Preston High School, she excelled athletically more than academically. She did gymnastics, played softball and was part of the school team, and also ran track on a national level.

Glitz & Glam Left an Impression on Her Early in Life

When she was just seven, she toured New York with her school and the place left quite an impression on her. She knew she wanted to make it big in the performing arts, right at that age. In the final year of high school, Lopez found out about a small-time casting agency.

She auditioned and bagged a role in a low-budget film, My Little Lady in 1986. To please her folks, she enrolled in the Baruch College but dropped out pretty soon, with the dream of becoming a movie star. A rift with her mom and dad over her career choice caused her to move out of her home.

Her First Stage Musical Laid the Foundation

She worked as an actor and dancer in a few stage musicals and that laid the foundation for her love of the performing arts. After winning a national competition in 1990, Lopez landed a minor role as a dancer on In Living Color, Fox’s comedy series. She played one of the several Fly Girls, in her curly hairstyle.

She continued working on In Living Color until 1993 and even moved to Los Angeles for the role. While already οn that job, in 1991, she was also selected as a backup dancer for New Kids on the Block for which she performed with the crew at the 18th Annual American Music Awards.

She Worked As a Backup Dancer for Janet Jackson

Did you know that in the early stages of her career, Lopez appeared in a music video of Janet Jackson? Before quitting In Living Color in 1993, Lopez was selected to dance to Janet Jackson’s song That’s the Way Love Goes. She was a background dancer and can be spotted in the music video easily if you watch it now.

She was all set to take the musical tour Janet World Tour with Jackson in late 1993, but other desires had taken root in her by that time. She backed out of the opportunity as she wanted to “do her own thing,” notwithstanding the nice salary that could’ve come with it. Well, she always was daring!

Her Acting Breakthrough Came Shortly After

She got her first professional acting role in 1993 for the direct-to-video drama movie Lost in the Wild. Later the same year, she signed a deal with CBS to co-star in Second Chances, a television series. Her Hollywood debut happened with My Family, a 1995 drama film by Gregory Nava.

Her role on My Family earned her the nomination for ‘Best Supporting Female’ at the Independent Spirit Awards. In 1997, she made a huge leap when she bagged the title role in the biopic, Selena. Lopez was estimated to have received a $1-million paycheck for the film, making her the highest paid Hispanic artist in history.

Lopez First Married in 1997, But It Ended Soon

Lopez’s personal life has always been the center of widespread media attention. She got married to Cuban waiter Ojani Noa on February 22, 1997, and endured numerous legal troubles after divorcing him in January 1998. She sued him for trying to publish a book about their marriage in 2006.

In 2007, a legal arbitrator issued a permanent injunction preventing Noa from casting Lopez in a negative light. Apart from the $545K, she was awarded in compensatory damages, Noa was ordered to hand over to Lopez all copies of the book and the materials related to it.

Meanwhile, Her Musical Magic Took Off

Jennifer Lopez’s debut single If You Had My Love was released in May 1999 and instantly became a mega-hit. The album, On The 6 hit the platinum mark in just two weeks and eventually went for the mark of 6x platinum. Soon, she started going by the moniker J-Lo, a name that fans loved to refer to her.

She subsequently named her second album J-Lo. Released on January 23, 2001, J-Lo was a commercial success, debuting at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200. This second album soon went 4x platinum because of hit songs like Get Right, I’m Real, and Play.

She Thought Her Second Marriage Would Last, But…

She dated record producer and rapper Sean Combs while working on her first album On The 6. In 1999, Lopez and Combs were arrested in connection with a shooting outside New York’s Times Square Club. After the incident, Lopez parted ways with Combs and came in contact with Cris Judd.

Jennifer Lopez dated former backup dancer Cris Judd for a brief time before getting married to him on September 29, 2001. Lopez was 32 at the time and thought she’d finally found love. However, the relationship didn’t last as long as she’d hoped. Citing “irreconcilable differences,” Lopez parted ways with Judd in 2002.

And Then Ben Affleck Came Along

While most thought she’d take a while to bounce back, the same year that she’d divorced Cris Judd, Lopez started dating popular actor-director, Ben Affleck. The two got engaged in November 2002 and were nicknamed “Bennifer” by the media. Their nickname became so popular that it started the name-blend trend for other celeb couples.

They planned to get hitched in September 2003 and started making the arrangements for the wedding in full swing, too. However, citing media interference as the reason, they postponed the ceremony indefinitely one day prior to their big day. Sadly, the two broke up in January 2004.

Lopez Co-starred With Affleck on Gigli While They Were Still Together

In 2003, while they were still romantically involved, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck starred in the romantic comedy film, Gigli. The movie got much media hype and attention since the lead pair was a real-life couple. The film was listed among the most expensive films at that time with a budget of $75.6 million.

Despite being directed by Martin Brest and featuring a successful pair, Gigli didn’t strike the right chords at the box office. It was received negatively worldwide and flopped with total earnings of only $7.2 million. Eventually, it was named as one of the worst films ever made!

Maid in Manhattan Marked a Milestone in Her Career

Reaching to the No. 1 spot on its opening weekend, Main in Manhattan marked a major milestone in Jennifer Lopez’s career. While critics gave the movie mixed reviews, Lopez received five nominations in 2003 for her role as “Marisa Ventura” in the romantic comedy film.

Interestingly, Sandra Bullock and Hillary Swank were among the top choices for the lead role, but it eventually went to Lopez who got $12 million in the bank for it. The film was rumored to have been based on the true story of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s son who married the maid that worked at his family’s Manhattan hotel.

Was Third Time the Charm?

After breaking up with Ben Affleck, Lopez started dating Marc Anthony, her long-time friend, with whom she wed in June 2004. On the final night of the co-headlining tour, Lopez and Marc announced that they were expecting their first-born. The mystery soon unfolded when Lopez’s father confirmed that they were having twins.

While things went pretty smooth for the couple for a good seven years, things started going downhill after that. The couple announced their split in July 2011 and the divorce was finalized in 2014 in favor of J-Lo, who got the primary physical custody of the kids.

She Was Paid Handsomely for Monster-in-Law

Remember Lopez’s hit film Monster-in-Law? The 2005 rom-com directed by Robert Luketic, that grossed over $150 million at the box office, starred Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda in lead roles. While it was a commercial success, the movie wasn’t exceptionally well received by critics, and Jane Fonda stole the show for her performance.

It might not cast Lopez in a much positive light since her performance was dubbed as mediocre, but the fact that her savings account increased by $15 million for her role in the movie more than made up for things. This once again made her the highest-paid Hispanic actress in Hollywood’s history at the time.

Happy Birthday To You, I Wish I Hadn’t Performed For You!

J-Lo performed at a birthday concert for the President of Turkmenistan, a man who was accused of committing widespread human rights violations and running a repressive nation. J-Lo had taken to the stage to perform some of her major hits followed by singing “happy birthday” for the president in traditional Turkmenistan clothes.

She was majorly criticized by human rights activists for having performed for a man who ran a nation coercively. In her defense, her publicist released a statement saying that J-Lo would not have performed there had she known about the human rights issues the country was facing.

No Looking Back After Receiving the Billboard Icon Award

In 2014, Lopez became the first female recipient of the Billboard Icon Award for her contribution to the music industry. By 2018, J-Lo’s films had grossed a total of $3 billion, and over 80 million copies of her records had been sold worldwide. That’s a lot of money!

J-Lo is famed for being the only female entertainer with both, the number one film and album, in the States concurrently. The World Music Awards presented her with the Legend Award for her contribution to the music industry. The music video for her song, On the Floor, was acknowledged as the “Highest Viewed Female Music Video of All Time” by the Guinness Book of World Records.

She Turned Producer for The Boy Next Door

With The Boy Next Door in 2015, J-Lo took her first step into film production. Written by Barbara Curry and directed by Rob Cohen, The Boy Next Door was a horror-thriller film starring Lopez and other prominent faces. Barbara Curry wrote the screenplay for the movie with inspirations from real-life situations of her life.

The movie is about a dangerous obsession that a young neighbor (with mental health issues) harbors for Lopez’s character after they get intimate for a night.  The thriller film got negative reviews but did well in the box office. It became one of Lopez’s most successful openings at the box office since Monster-in-Law.

Her Journey on American Idol

Being a major name in the music industry, J-Lo has also been a judge on American Idol for 3 seasons. In fact, she was one of the first few celebs to be hired for reality show judging panels. Following her appointment on the show, a trend of hiring “big names” for judging panels started.

J-Lo was fascinated with the Salsa and the Bachata Latin dance styles growing up. Her portfolio of singing and dancing skills made her the perfect candidate to be selected for judging a show like American Idol which served as a platform for many to show-off their moves.

Coffee? Nah!

Jennifer Lopez leads a lifestyle characterized by superb health and fitness despite her packed schedule. Being the star of the popular TV show Shades of Blue, a regular performer at Planet Hollywood, and a judge on World of Dance, J-Lo believes that being dependent on caffeine is not a solution.

She rather believes in getting a good nine to ten hours of straight sleep since that is far more rewarding than being caffeine dependant. J-Lo tries getting a minimum of ten hours of sleep but if she skips out on it sometimes, she believes that 7 hours at the minimum ought to do the trick.

She Makes 50 Look Like 30!

We’re as mesmerized by J-Lo’s shape as you are. Over the years, she’s been following a strict meal plan and exercise regime to sculpt her about-to-be-50 body which, by the way, looks like that of a 30-year-old. And the #1 rule she follows is – drinking as much water as she can, especially before a round of exertions.

She doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink, and consumes almost zero sugar. Sometimes, she likes to indulge in chocolate chips, which are her favorite, and an occasional cup of decaf. And if you’re wondering how she manages to have such willpower, it’s because she believes those things ruin the skin and make one look dull.

She Often Goes Makeup-free

Jennifer Lopez likes to keep things stylish while maintaining simplicity, and towards that end, she often goes without any makeup. She recently shared an Instagram clip before one of her shows and captioned it with the words, “So this is what it’s like before the show.”

She added that before a show, she likes to spend a little time without makeup, with her thoughts, to get mentally prepared. In another no-makeup video, she appeared with her tresses tied up into a messy bun. The video was captioned, “Getting ready for the show…”

The Interesting Nicknames & Public Image

Jennifer Lopez has always been a very fit lady. She was often referred to as “La Guitarra” by her gym-mates because her body curves resembled the shape of a guitar. In her childhood, she was also called “The Supernova” by her friends who admired her.

Lopez is often commended for her callipygian figure, and she’s been the reason for influencing a change in mainstream female body image. After she became popular, Lopez’s body type started being widely accepted. Some tabloids also claim that Lopez has influenced the change in women to be able to see themselves better.

From Being Influenced to Being An Influencer

Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, and Madonna were major inspirations in Lopez’s life and she greatly admired them. J-Lo remembered one movie in particular which resonated with her at the time she’d been living in New York. Rita Moreno, the Puerto Rican actress who won an Oscar for the film, moved J-Lo extensively.

She is credited for being the most influential Hispanic performer and is also acclaimed for breaking racial barriers in the entertainment industry. There was a point in her career where J-Lo had established herself as an oft-provocative feminine symbol. Having won several accolades and titles, Lopez is one of the most inspirational celebrities out there – a  great model.

I’m Free… Free From This World

Being regarded as one of the most popular Hispanic influencers in Social Media, music, and TV, Lopez is likewise considered to be responsible for the introduction of Hispanic presence in the film industry by the Record newspaper.

She is also referred to as a multidimensional artist who has turned into a financial powerhouse. In The Afro-Latin Reader, Miriam Jiménez Román stated that J-Lo has been able to cut across the tough racial boundaries and she stood tall, becoming an icon to women across the world. Her achievements have set her free and have grown her net worth tremendously as well.

Her 2019 Grammy Performance Became Controversial

The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which hosts the Grammys for recognizing achievements in the music industry, has faced racism charges for years for not rewarding performers in big categories. Due to recent controversies, many high-profile names refused to perform at the Grammys despite the awards paying a 60th-anniversary tribute to Motown.

However, Jennifer Lopez (in her dazzling dress) agreed to perform at the event, along with Smokey Robinson, Ne-Yo, and Alicia Keys for a medley of Motown’s biggest hits. While the reason behind the move was J-Lo’s high ratings, people slammed it, asking why a white woman gave tribute to a recording label that was dedicated to grooming black talent!

She’s Now Engaged to Alex Rodriquez

In February 2017, Lopez started dating former New York Yankees player, Alex Rodriguez. In 2018, a source informed the US Weekly about the two planning on moving in together since they had no trouble merging their families (Rodriguez has two daughters from a previous marriage). Rodriguez was quoted as saying that being with her made him feel like a kid.

Celebrity news and Social Media attest to their devotion.  For his birthday, J-Lo penned down a sweet appreciation for him saying that she loved the time she got to spend with him and was thankful for knowing him more. She added that she was astonished at the way he was so generous and loving.

All Set to Be Jennifer Rodriguez

A source told the US Weekly about Alex’s obsession with J-Lo and the fact that that’s what made him pop the question. The couple announced their engagement in March 2019 and Ellen DeGeneres, their close friend, was already on board to help with the matrimonial preparations.

On her show, DeGeneres had joked about how the clock was ticking on the proposal to J-Lo, and maybe, Rodriguez was listening! Ellen further wrote on Lopez’s Instagram that she agreed to be her maid of honor, announcing the engagement to the world which celebrated the news and blessed the couple.

She Owns the Most Coveted Cars

If Jennifer Lopez can’t afford any car she wants, who can?! The mega-celebrity who has a fortune of several hundred millions of dollars owns one of the most enviable collections of luxury cars in the world of celebrities (and otherwise). One of them is a brand-new Bentley Continental GT Convertible.

The pearl white beauty adds to her prized possessions which already include a Rolls-Royce Ghost and an Aston Martin DB 7. If tabloids are to be believed, the vehicle was bought by Lopez for her one-time boyfriend, Casper Smart. Being just 24, Smart was often referred to with less-than-respectable nicknames.

So What Is She Worth?

For a woman of humble beginnings, J-Lo has come a long way. Today, she stands among Forbes’ Celebrities 100 List having a steadily increasing income and net worth. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Jennifer Lopez is worth $400 million in 2019. She currently makes roughly $40-million dollars a year.

She lives quite a lavish life composed of beach houses, custom homes, and luxury rides. Given that her income is on a steady rise over the years, her wealth is on the path to rise even more. Currently, she stands among the top 100 highest-paid celebrities in the world.

Doing The Work To Look Good

Jennifer Lopez is known for being a talented actress and singer, but there’s no way we can talk about J.Lo without mentioning her beautiful body. Jennifer Lopez is extremely fit, especially for a woman at 50 (in 2019), but her good looks and ripped physique didn’t just appear out of nowhere.

A lot of work and discipline is put into J.Lo’s diet plan. Lopez drinks lots of water, avoids caffeine and booze to the point that she’s stopped consuming both, eats only organic food that includes a lot of vegetables, and obviously spends a lot of time working on her rock-solid abs.

If You Like It Then You Should Put a Ring on It

For a woman like Jennifer Lopez, male attention comes easily. Over the years, she’s been involved with multiple celebrities and married three times. She was also famously engaged to Ben Affleck, but the couple that the media dubbed as Bennifer never really made it to the altar.

Inspiring the affection of men that are both rich and famous usually comes with a lot of expensive gifts, and J.Lo has been showered with an impressive number of very expensive engagement rings. Marc Anthony proposed with a $4M diamond band; Chris Judd went with a six-figure emerald-cut design, and Ben Affleck once offered J.Lo a 6.1-carat pink-diamond Harry Winston engagement ring.

Let’s Meet Her Twins, Max & Emme!

J-Lo has given her fans many peeks of her twins, Emme and Mark, over the past few years. Born in Long Island, New York, in February 2008, the star kids were an instant hit. People magazine paid $6 million to photograph the kids and introduce them to the world through its March issue!

In May 2015, when J-Lo opened up about her being a parent to TV host Ellen DeGeneres, she said that she loved her kids and she wished she had four or five more. She also added that she loved the bond she shared with the twins and she loved them unconditionally.

The Jennifer Lopez-Mariah Carey Fiasco

Pop stars are known to spark feuds with their competitors on the smallest of remarks. In the early ‘00s, while doing an interview, Mariah Carey was asked for her opinion on several pop stars. While she reacted positively to Beyoncé’s reference, when asked about J-Lo, Carey surprisingly said, “I don’t know her.”

While it could have been brushed aside, J-Lo’s fans and the media refused to take it lying down and instead, composed a meme out of it. Even today, whenever they’re asked about it, both singers make their best attempts to just smile and react nonchalantly to the whole thing.

And This Is How Both Reacted to the Whole Thing Years Later

When Andy Cohen asked J-Lo about Mariah Carey’s by-then famous line, “I don’t know her,” like a real lady that she was, J-Lo responded to it very calmly. She said she was aware of the things Carey had said about her which weren’t the greatest, but the truth was that they’d never met.

Years later, when Carey was asked about the same thing, she pointed out that when she uttered those words, she wasn’t trying to be funny. Instead, she said, she was just being honest and couldn’t understand why everyone was blowing it out of proportion. Well, see how celebrity news can make or break issues!

She Bought a New Home in Hampton for $10 Million

Sometime in 2013, J-Lo made a huge real estate investment in Water Mill, in the Hamptons. According to reports, she spent close to $10 million on a posh, wide expanse of land with a custom home which would be the perfect summer retreat for her and her family.

Her new home is well equipped with a sparkling pool, theater, sauna, covered porches, and much more. The house has eight bedrooms, and spans across an area of 8,500 square feet, sitting on three acres of land. With a cul-de-sac of its own, it’s incredibly private.

Her Body Transformation

J-Lo keeps her fans updated with her latest pictures, and she did the same when she posted an impressive toned photo of hers on Instagram while performing her “All I Have” show in Las Vegas. Talking about her fitness, she said that she was committed to being at the best shape of her life.

She has had twins, is in her 50s and has had a rather impressive career, but her body and skin don’t show any of it. The 2-time Grammy nominee is very firm on weight training and sculpting routines and has inspired many to start their own fitness journey.
