Bruce Willis

Today’s younger movie fans might know the legendary actor Bruce Willis for his signature bald look, but what they don’t know is that he once sported long hair. While it might seem pretty unimaginable, the ‘Pulp Fiction’ star grew his mane for a film role.

The flick in question was ‘The Jackal,’ which saw Willis in a long blonde mane, which even at the time was pretty unexpected since a lot of people were used to seeing the A-lister in short hair. Nonetheless, it all shows what Hollywood stars would be willing to do to give us the best performances as the characters they get cast to play.

Mel Gibson

For the past four decades, Mel Gibson has been a famous actor who has wowed the masses with his flawless performances. The star has appeared in countless roles throughout his career, which required him to adapt, but when he landed a role in the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, Mel did something unexpected to fit the character.

Since Gibson’s character was known for his long hair, the actor changed his hairstyle and went for long locks. We must say he looked pretty different and incredibly handsome either way, and the mane really fit his style at the time; one could actually think Mel was a cool beach surfer!

Bono

We all evolve as we grow older, and people in the creative industry are no different. When Bono first hit the music scene in the ’80s, he was known for his overflowing black hair, which even won him many fans. Fast forward years later, Bono’s mane underwent several changes to suit his newfound persona.

The ‘U2’ lead singer has switched between having a mullet to getting the locks trimmed down for a more punk vibe which he goes by to date. Given his experimental nature, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see Bono in a different hairstyle for the band’s world tours in the future.

Hugh Jackman

It’s hard to imagine seeing Hugh Jackman in long hair! Yes, that really happened in 2003, when the acclaimed actor sported a long mane for his role in the ‘X-Men’ film. Since then, though, the star has shifted to wearing a shorter hairstyle, but we must say, he looked different in long locks.

Jackman is known for his action flicks, with his role as the Wolverine winning him rave reviews and countless accolades. It would have been interesting to see him in the long hair while on the part, although we doubt it would have been as macho as we became used to seeing him in the role.

Brad Pitt

Before Brad Pitt adopted his signature short hairstyle, the actor was famous for his lengthy mane, which gave him that rugged look that made him undeniably stand out. Brad had the locks for his role in the ‘Legends of the Fall’ film, released in 1994.

Not many people can rock both short and long hairstyles and still look amazingly good, but then again, Mr. Pitt isn’t like most people anyway. The Hollywood legend’s bound to turn heads wherever he goes regardless of the size of his curls. What’s more, Brad was still just as much the ladies’ man even when he was sporting longer hair back in the day.

Jared Leto

Jared Leto is one of the few modern-day renaissance men in the art and entertainment world today. The ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ star is widely celebrated for his dedication to method acting; Sometimes going to extreme measures to physically transform for a film part. With that said, off-camera, Jared just likes to experiment with different hairstyles.

In the 2000s, ‘ the Thirty Seconds to Mars’ lead vocalist opted for a flowy mane with a choppy cut at the end, making him look like a true rock star. Over the years, though, Leto has switched things up with shorter, wavy hair. No matter what style, Jared’s fans love every look and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Tom Cruise

Anyone who has followed the action film genre in the past couple of decades knows who Tom Cruise is. The legendary actor has starred in numerous action-packed flicks, which have brought him fame and fortune in equal measure. What many people don’t know, though, is that the A-lister once had long hair before going for the signature short mane that we all now recognize.

Tom wore the lengthy curls for his role in the ‘Top G*n’ movie that hit theatres back in 1986, and he was absolutely brilliant in his performance. Even so, while the style worked for the flick, we doubt it would be allowed in any real-life army base.

Daniel Radcliffe

From starring in the ‘Harry Potter’ films as the titular character to becoming among the highest-paid actors in the business, Daniel Radcliffe’s rise to the top has been phenomenal. The star has indeed grown from his Hogwarts school days, and that includes his changing hairdo as required.

For the ‘Escape from Pretoria’ movie, Radcliffe grew out his hair to suit the role, and many people were shocked by it, with some not feeling entirely impressed. Luckily, it was a one-time thing, and immediately after getting his next gig, Daniel’s long mane went back to what his fans were used to; short and neat.

Johnny Depp

If you thought Johnny Depp only started sporting long locks for his prominent role on the swashbuckler film franchise ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ you could be mistaken. The Hollywood legend has been a fan of having his hair at shoulder length since the 1990s.

Johnny used to wear it rugged back then to complete his shaggy persona, which we all grew to love and associate with him. While he has tried out some shorter hairdos in the past, we bet Depp looks better in his signature fluffy hair, but who knows? Maybe we’ll see him in yet another different hairstyle for a film role in the future.

David Beckham

When you’re among the most successful and skilled football players in the world, you can wear your hair however you like. David Beckham has been known just as much for his exciting hairstyles as his sporting prowess, with the celebrated athlete’s modeling endeavors even influencing several trends in the past.

Back in 2003, Beckham opted for shoulder-length blonde hair, which he rocked to perfection. How can someone look so good, regardless of their hairdo? The football star is undoubtedly among the most handsome men on the planet, and whether he decides to keep his mane short or long, David is always going to turn heads.

Christian Bale

At the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, Christian Bale surprised showbiz fans when he appeared with shoulder-length hair and a beard. The first speculation was that he was probably growing his hair to prepare for a film project, as the actor has been known for changing looks depending on the role he is playing.

After he was awarded a Best Supporting Actor award for this performance in ‘The Fighter,’ Christian was asked by ‘Access Hollywood’ why he was leaving his hair to grow that long. He answered that he was in-between projects at the time and was merely enjoying not having to get a haircut or shave.

Jon Bon Jovi

Being an ’80s icon, Jon Bon Jovi had the long hairstyle reminiscent of that decade. The rock star was always known for his long, curly hair, and many men would copy his style so they would look as cool as he did.

Still active as a recording artist, Bon Jovi has bid adieu to the long locks and has transitioned to a shorter, more mellow hairstyle. He has also revealed that contrary to popular perception, he was never really into the party lifestyle associated with the rock and roll culture of the ’80s, despite donning that long hair that is often associated with the period.

Joe Jonas

Among the Jonas Brothers, it was Joe Jonas who was able to pull off the long-hair look elegantly. With his bushy eyebrows, chiseled jawline, and deep brown eyes, the appearance definitely suited him, and it became the signature look that set him apart from his siblings.

Once the brotherly boy band went their separate ways and took on solo projects, Joe bid farewell to the long hair and tried other styles. After a while, the brothers came back together as a group, and we can’t help but wonder if he will grow his locks longer once more, at least for old times’ sake.

Lenny Kravitz

We miss this iteration of Lenny Kravitz: his performances with long dreadlocks that always made him steal the show whenever he was performing on stage. Even most of the music videos that we still remember to this day featured him with this iconic look from the peak of his popularity in the ’90s.

Years down the line, Lenny has opted for a shorter hairdo. Although he is still just as talented and never fails to amaze us when he performs his biggest songs, we kind of wish we could see him again with the long hair we loved from our younger days.

Jake Gyllenhaal

We usually see actor Jake Gyllenhaal with a shorter hairdo, but in 2014 he had to grow his hair past shoulder length as part of his portrayal in the movie ‘Everest.’ At the same time, he also sported a full beard to match the longer locks, and it was quite a sight for fans to behold.

Thankfully, Jake has a thick head of hair that always looks conditioned, glossy, and with that natural bounce that we all admire. Even the man bun looks great on him. So while we like the clean-cut look that he usually maintains, this scruffy version isn’t all that bad either.

Alexander Skarsgard

Swedish heartthrob Alexander Skarsgard is blessed with good looks, undeniable charisma, and hair that always looks unbelievably manageable no matter what style he is sporting. In this picture, a younger Alexander looks very chill with that longer hairstyle, which goes great with his laid-back outfit and that scarf to complete the ensemble.

Alexander once shaved his head bald for a movie project that he wanted to portray with authenticity. Fans went crazy, but thankfully the actor was able to grow his hair back. This style definitely looks better on him, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that there will be no more major hair changes for him soon.

Adrian Grenier

Among Hollywood leading men, Adrian Grenier has always been among those with the best hairstyles. In fact, early on in his career, Adrian kept his hair length usually up to his chin, and in his popular starring role in ‘Entourage’, his thick, brunette hair always completed his look.

So when Adrian decided to let go of his shaggy mane and buzz off most of his beautiful, long hair, there was a collective disappointment among showbiz enthusiasts. Not that he looks any less gorgeous with the shorter style, but we definitely want to see Arian with a luxuriously full head of hair again.

Billy Crudup

We have almost always seen Billy Crudup with shorter hair cuts for most of his long and storied career. Still, in the film ‘Almost Famous,’ which came out in 2000, the actor decided to grow his hair longer specifically for the role, and the result was amazing.

We dare say that Billy actually looks younger and more dramatic with shoulder-length hair; He almost looks like a completely new person. While others will probably look messy with this style, Billy manages to pull it off effortlessly. He’s gone back to shorter styles now, but maybe he might consider growing his hair longer again in the future.

Brendan Fraser

Alright, let’s just be honest about the film ‘George of the Jungle’; This 1995 movie was not exactly a cinematic masterpiece. Still, it was loads of fun to watch, and we all enjoyed seeing Brendan Fraser in the title role, up to his jungle antics, while sporting a long hairstyle that fit his forest-dwelling character.

It seems Brendan also enjoyed that style immensely because he kept that mane of hair for a few more years, long after the role. Nowadays, we can only hope that the movie gets a sequel and he plays the main character again, so we can see Brendan get into all kinds of hilarious scrapes with long hair once more.

Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck is one of those leading men that just seem to get better over time. He has played so many different characters by now, yet we still can’t seem to get enough of him and his acting. Tom’s sense of style doesn’t miss as well, and one of his most iconic looks was his long hair and mustache in the mid-1980s.

Nothing fits the style and vibe of that decade more than this hairdo, and while the aura seems dated now, Tom still looks just as appealing. The revered veteran star dons a shorter hairstyle now, and Tom also admits that he doesn’t dye his hair because he considers aging a blessing.

Rod Stewart

It isn’t just Rod Stewart’s songs that are popular among listeners; his hairstyle also has been equally famous. While the mullet cut was in vogue in the ’70s, the singer was among the few who could pull off the look with ease. Nonetheless, we have been curious about how the hit-maker could rock a perfectly tamed mane over the years.

Interestingly, in an interview, Rod revealed that mayonnaise did the trick for him, and that’s how he could maintain his hairstyle while on stage. This performer has stayed committed to tousled hair and stuck by that look with a bit of twist. So, every time he steps out, the singing legend’s locks continue to amaze us.

Joe Manganiello

Joe Manganiello’s signature long hair has mesmerized us for years. While he has experimented with several hairstyles from time to time, we can assure you the mid-length cut did enhance his striking features. Plus, Joe certainly knows how to manage his untamed locks, sweeping them away from his face.

The ‘Impact Point’ star also proved that one doesn’t need to have extensively lengthy tresses to look stylish and that chin-length curls can work too. Well, this look certainly worked for the actor, so it was heartbreaking to see him chop off his waves and was seen sporting a crew cut. Even though Joe looks equally handsome, we do miss his trademark look from ‘True Blood.’

Joaquin Phoenix

There was a time when Joaquin Phoenix shocked Hollywood with his announcement of retiring from acting. We even saw him drastically change as he gained a few pounds, but that wasn’t it as the actor also grew out his beard and hair. Well, it was certainly surprising for the viewers to see all that hair covering Joaquin’s handsome face.

So it turns out that the artist’s newly grown locks were a part of his look in ‘I’m Still Here.’ Being a method actor, Joaquin has sported numerous hairstyles for various roles, and the ‘Joker’ star managed to pull off the longer locks well. Yet, we seem to prefer seeing Joaquin rock the shorter mane we are familiar with.

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson continues to inspire artists all over the globe despite his untimely demise. He was known for his impeccable voice, but he became a style icon due to his sensational hairdos. While Michael revived the Jheri curls, adding a personal touch to it, the singer soon ditched the long hairstyle trend.

In the late ’80s, we did see the pop star toss his longer mane each time he performed on stage while flaunting his bigger and loser curls. We believe many of you would agree that Michael looked good with those shoulder-length curls. Yet, after a few years, the performer moved from a stringy look to wavier manes.

Emile Hirsch

Hollywood celebrities have repeatedly surprised the audiences with their varying looks. Whether as part of their role or to bring a change in their appearance. The former is the case for Emile Hirsch, who has sported numerous hairstyles throughout his career in the film industry. Yet, there was a time when we spotted him on the red carpet in long blonde hair.

The actor grew out his hair because of his role in the ‘Lords of Dogtown,’ but he started to like it eventually. Emile, in an interview, candidly revealed he wanted to bring back the trend of a lengthier mane. In addition, he even secured significant roles in a handful of projects thanks to his new look.

Sam Elliott

One actor who undoubtedly deserves to be on this list is the legendary star, Sam Elliott. There was a period when he sported his signature look – a head full of hair, but this time it went all the way down to his shoulder, and he indeed nailed it. Although the artist chops off his hair now and then, we wish to see Sam growing his manes again.

This celebrity has been one of the most recognizable faces of Hollywood, and his trademark look is certainly not easy to pull off. Yet, even today, Sam has managed to capture our attention, and it seems like he’s getting more handsome with age.

Harry Styles

When Harry Styles began to grow out his hair, fans thought it was just a phase he was going through. Nonetheless, over the years, he evolved a lot, not only in his career but in grooming too. The ‘Watermelon Sugar’ singer became famous for his long untamed locks for all the right reasons. So it was hard for many to recall Harry with a shorter haircut.

In 2015, we spotted the songwriter with shoulder-length tousled waves, which undoubtedly looked good on him. Unfortunately, after his exit from the band ‘One Direction,’ Harry chopped off his locks for his role in ‘Dunkirk.’ With his new transformation, the artist did prove he can pull off any hairstyle with grace.

Ashton Kutcher

Long hair or not, American actor Ashton Kutcher has changed up his mane more times than we can count. It’s like he knows he’ll still look hot in any hairstyle and has relied on that fact the many times he has switched up his hairstyle. From slicked-down bangs and short and messy to long and curly, we doubt if there’s a hairstyle the ‘Punk’D’ host hasn’t tried.

Ashton had quite the long hair when he stepped in as a replacement on ‘Two and a Half Men’ in 2011. The star grew out his hair and a beard to fit into his Walden Schmidt role, and he did – a luxury some actors don’t get to experience.

Chad Michael Murray

The thing is, fans will hardly agree on when actor Chad Michael Murray looks more attractive. Is it with short or long hair or both? We’d have to be here all day long if we asked for opinions, so no, we are not doing that. Well, for those who didn’t know, the actor had long hair at one point.

Chad had chin-length hair when he appeared in the film ‘Freaky Friday’ in 2002. Too bad the ‘One Tree Hill’ star didn’t have the look for long as he had much shorter hair when he made an appearance on his next film, ‘A Cinderella Story.’ The actor still looked as handsome, though; we’ll give him that.

Matt Damon

If anyone has taken the man bun to a whole new level, that has to be the American actor and producer Matt Damon because we are still not over his laid-back bun look. We aren’t even over his pony look before the bun, but the latter wins.

Damon stirred the internet when he first appeared with the updo for ‘The Great Wall’ filming in 2015. He brought it on again the following year while promoting his ‘Jason Bourne’ film, and we couldn’t keep calm because the star looked as fascinating as ever. The truth is, it doesn’t matter what hairstyle Damon pulls because his good looks complement all of them.

Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth is famous for his Thor role, and so is his hair on the film. Why? Because usually, he wears his hair short, but for the film, the long hair complements his character so well you wouldn’t want to imagine a short-haired Thor.

This explains fans’ disappointment when news broke that Thor wouldn’t be rocking his usual style anymore. One of the reasons for this move was justified, though, given that Hemsworth revealed the wig always took him two good hours to put on. So we imagine it must have felt like a chore to him and a tedious one at that.

Andre Agassi

We are deeply sorry if anyone thought Andre Agassi’s lion mane hairstyle in the ’90s was his actual hair. The former American Tennis player admitted in his autobiography that it was a mullet wig instead. Agassi wore the hairpiece with pins to his 1990 French Open final praying it wouldn’t fall off his head.

Funny enough, when he lost the match to Andres Gomez, the star blamed it on his worry that the hair would come down during the game. Agassi started wearing a wig when he began losing his hair. Finally tired of wearing wigs in disguise, the legend decided to go bald after his wife Brooke Shields persuaded him.

Colin Farrell

Before his shoulder-length hair on ‘Pride and Glory,’ Irish actor Colin Farrell mainly rocked short hair. Well, not as short as his completely shaved look on ‘Dare Devils,’ but fairly short all the same. It, therefore, wouldn’t be surprising that most people don’t know he once rocked long hair and looked stunning in it, especially because he accessorized it with beautiful silver earrings.

Seemingly, Farrell isn’t attached to his hair a great deal and keeps switching between different styles, but we notice he leans more towards the shorter ones. Either way, he looks just as great in all of them, and we wonder if his always-fitting hairstyles should qualify as a superpower.

Charlie Hunnam

We’ve seen many TV stars change up their look so they could fit into a film character, and Charlie Hunnam is one of them. For his Nicholas Nickleby role in 2002, the star allowed his blonde hair and beard grow out, and we’ll admit he looked different. Maybe it’s because we are used to short-haired Hunnam with slicked back or buzz-cut hair.

Despite the distinct appearance, the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ actor looked really cool in his long hair that we wouldn’t mind if he goes back to it. The major question, however, would be whether Hunnam liked himself in that long blonde hair.

Orlando Bloom

Legolas, the hunky elf from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, is undoubtedly a character that’s hard to forget, and kudos to the English actor Orlando Bloom for breathing life into it. But something just as worthy of mention as the exceptional performance were his blonde locks which stole the show.

Now, we hate to break this to the character-shippers; the hairdo was but a wig. That, though, doesn’t mean that the star has never worn the shoulder-length cut in real life. In fact, in the mid-2000s, Orlando grew out his hair to rock a classic tousled look, which also happened to be an aesthetic for his role in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series.

Tom Brady

Most NFL fans are well aware of Tom Brady’s field presence. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise when he makes headlines for his sports ventures. Nevertheless, close to the dawn of the 2010 decade, the quarterback was all over social media. Not his playing techniques, but it was his shoulder-reaching golden tresses this time that captured the audience’s eyes, and we bet many must have mistaken him for Tom Cruise from the ‘Mission Impossible’ series.

Now, what would otherwise have gone unnoticed became news when Brady did it because folks had never seen him in such likeness before. But, honestly speaking, those long hair strands did make us wonder if the sports star was a Bieber fan too!

Tom Hiddleston

As Tom Hiddleston featured on the list of the world’s most handsome men, it is fair to assume that he not only possesses impeccable performing knacks but also striking looks. The ‘Golden Globe’ winner had a great character arc playing Loki in the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe,’ and fans couldn’t help but “marvel” at his unique hairstyle.

Mostly sporting long hairs during the 11 years of acting in the superhero franchise, Hiddleston experimented with a handful of styles, including long layered spikes and laid-back bob curls. Though not all will appreciate the long tresses the actor once rocked, it will surprise most that what they saw wasn’t his natural hair. Yes, more than a decade, and we couldn’t spot that wig!

Austin Butler

Austin Butler wore the blonde long-haired vogue for so long that it came as a shocker when a fresh cut debuted on his lookbook. We haven’t scratched the surface yet, because the star went all in by dyeing his hair dark, and fans couldn’t help but digest this stark change. Actually, it was his next role as Elvis Presley that demanded the transformation.

After Butler’s split with his long-term girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens, we would say the darker and much shorter hair was an equal headline maker. Now, unarguably, the actor-cum-model looks phenomenal in his fresh look, but we became a little too accustomed to spotting him in airports in his ever-so-gorgeous beachy waves.

Jason Priestley

Jason Priestley has always been a heartthrob for ladies, so it’s safe to guess that the reason could lie in his signature trimmed-short flat top hairstyle. He wore this look throughout his time on the TV series ‘Beverly Hills’ where he played Brandon Walsh, and anyone would agree that he beamed with class.

In his later years in Hollywood, Priestly sported, for good, we’d say, a somewhat different trend. With his new long-grown tresses that almost reached the back of his neck, the actor effortlessly slew the ’90s style. His shiny golden hair looked so alluring we bet it was a major inspiration for most teens in that time who tried to wear the type.

Chris Pine

The clean-cut brunette hairstyle that brings out his gorgeous blue eyes and gives him a sophisticated look has become the signature appearance for Chris Pine. So, when the award-winning American actor opted for a long hairstyle with highlights, many were astonished by the new look and how handsome he appeared.

Pine made his acting debut in a 2003 episode of the medical drama ‘ER’ and became an international sensation with his role in the 2009 ‘Star Trek’ film. Since then, the Hollywood star has become known for his remarkable acting skills and impeccable fashion sense. Only Chris can pull off longer bangs in a classical way for a movie premiere.
